How Long a Cleaned Carpet Takes to Dry (and Why)

Walk on it after 3 to 5 hours. Fully dry in 12 to 24. That's the honest answer for hot water extraction in a Seattle home, and here's what moves it within that range — and why you should be suspicious of anyone promising a lot less.

What the number depends on

• Airflow. An open window and a ceiling fan can take hours off. A closed room in November adds them.
• Pile and padding. Thick plush over thick pad holds more water than a low commercial loop.
• How dirty it was. Heavier soil means more passes and more water in and out.
• The season. King County damp in winter is real; summer afternoons dry a room by dinner.

Why not faster

Some methods advertise a carpet dry in an hour or two. They do that by using very little water — which also means very little gets pulled back out. Hot water extraction works because it goes in and then comes out, and what comes out is the dirt. A carpet that's damp for a few hours has been rinsed; a carpet that's dry in an hour has been wiped.

The failure mode isn't damp, it's wet. A rental machine floods the carpet and hasn't the suction to recover it, so water sits in the backing for days, wicks the soil up as it dries and leaves brown rings. The point of a strong extraction and a rinse is exactly that the carpet is damp on top and not wet underneath — which is what makes 12 to 24 hours the right number rather than 3 days.

What to do while it dries

• Open windows, run fans, turn the heat up a notch in winter. Air moving across the carpet is what dries it.
• Walk on it in socks after 3–5 hours if you need to; not in outdoor shoes.
• Keep pets off it until it's dry.
• Furniture with wooden or metal feet: keep it off the carpet until fully dry, or put a square of foil or plastic under each foot. Wood stain and rust transfer to a damp carpet and don't come out.

Sofas and rugs

About the same. A sofa is walk-on — sit-on — in a few hours; a thick area rug on a hard floor is quicker than the same rug on carpet, because air gets underneath. A mattress needs the full day with the sheets off.

Timing a booking around it

• Morning appointment: dry by the time you go to bed.
• Moving out: carpets the day before the walk-through, not the morning of.
• Guests coming: two days before, not the afternoon before.
