Pet Urine in Carpet: Why the Smell Comes Back

The pattern is always the same: you clean the spot, it looks fine, and two humid days later the smell is back. That's not bad luck. It's because urine is three different stains in one place, and the product under your sink only takes two of them.

Three stains in one spot

• The yellow color — comes out with a peroxide-based product.
• The organic part — needs an enzyme cleaner to break it down. This is the one home products skip.
• The smell — needs a dedicated odor remover, after the organic part is gone, or it comes straight back.

Home products take the color and mask the smell. The organic part stays, keeps breaking down, and on a warm or damp day — most days in Seattle — it announces itself. We treat all three, in that order.

What's under the carpet

A fresh accident sits in the pile. An old one, or a repeat spot, has gone through the carpet into the padding and sometimes the subfloor. That matters because the padding is where the smell lives, and it's the part nobody can see. We can treat deep and pull a lot of it back out; when the source is that deep we can't always physically reach all of it, and we'll tell you what we expect before we start rather than after.

What not to do

• Don't scrub. Blot with a towel, standing on it. Scrubbing spreads it and pushes it down.
• Don't put a store-bought spot cleaner on it. Several of them lift the dye out of the carpet along with the stain, and lifted dye is permanent — you trade a treatable stain for a pale patch.
• Don't rent a machine and flood it. Too much water with too little suction soaks the backing, and a soaked backing wicks brown marks up as it dries.
• Do tell us where the spots are, including the old ones you've given up on. Different treatment for each.

What it costs

Nothing extra. Stains and pet odors are included in the room price — you pay for a clean room, not for the number of accidents in it. A bedroom with three spots costs what a bedroom costs:

The honest limit

If the dye has already lifted — from the urine itself or from something rubbed into it — the smell goes and the pale patch stays. That's the fiber, not dirt. If the source has soaked deep into old padding, most of the smell goes and a trace can remain on the dampest days. In both cases we tell you before we start. And if a spot comes back within 48 hours, we come back and re-clean it, free.
