Mattress Cleaning in Seattle: The One Thing You Can't Wash

Sheets and covers go in the machine. The mattress never does — so whatever soaks through it stays there. That's the whole reason to clean one: it's the single piece of bedding you can't wash. It's also the thing nobody replaces early, and cleaning it is what keeps the years you still have with it pleasant.

What comes out, and what doesn't

Mattresses have cotton in the top layers, so the cotton rules apply. Fresh spots come out. Old blood and urine stains are the tough ones: cotton slowly stains itself over time, and once it's dyed, that's permanent — a yellowed patch on an old mattress isn't dirt, it's the cotton. The smell goes, the freshness comes back; the color may stay. We tell you which before we start, not after.

And please don't scrub a spill out yourself first. A store-bought cleaner rubbed into cotton is the most common way a treatable stain becomes a permanent one. Blot it, leave it, call.

How long before you can sleep on it

We extract hard and rinse, so the mattress is damp on the surface rather than wet inside. Plan on a morning appointment and a made-up bed by evening — leave the sheets off and a window open. In a Seattle winter give it the full day.

When it's worth doing
